I’ve been meaning to do this for a while.
Start writing things down. Not necessarily because I have anything particularly profound to say, but because the older I get, the more I realize how much of life happens while we’re busy trying to figure out what we’re supposed to be doing with it.
I’m 41 now, which is an interesting age. Old enough to have made some pretty spectacular mistakes, young enough to still be making them, and somewhere in the middle of wondering whether I’m actually getting any wiser.
I’ve spent most of my adult life making music. Writing songs, singing them, putting them out into the world, and hoping they find their way to someone who needs them. It’s a strange way to make a living, really. Taking the most personal parts of your life, dressing them up in a melody, and asking complete strangers to listen.
And somehow, after all these years, I still love it.
But there’s a lot more to life than music. Even when music has a way of sneaking into just about everything.
There’s running, for one. I’ve become one of those people who willingly gets up and runs ridiculous distances for absolutely no reason. There’s getting older, and watching your body and your priorities change, sometimes without asking your permission. There’s love, and loss, and friendships, and family, and trying to understand the person you’ve become while occasionally missing the person you used to be.
There’s also the rather uncomfortable realization that you can spend years working toward a particular version of your life, only to arrive somewhere completely different.
I’m learning that being lost isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’ve always enjoyed getting lost, actually. Although these days I do prefer having a reasonably good idea of where I’m sleeping that night.
I don’t really know what this little corner of my website is going to become. Some days I’ll probably write about music, the industry, and what it means to keep making art when you’re no longer the newest kid in the room. Other days it might be about running, relationships, something I’ve read, or an ordinary Tuesday that turned out to be less ordinary than expected.
I suppose I’m hoping this becomes a place where I can be a little less concerned with having something polished to present, and a little more interested in simply telling the truth.
No grand revelations promised. No five-step plans for becoming a better person.
Just life, as it’s happening.
Anyway, welcome. I’m glad you’re here.
